History of the AFL Anzac Day Clash
The tradition of the Anzac Day AFL match began in 1995 when Collingwood and Essendon Football Clubs played against each other on April 25th. The timing coincides with the broader Anzac Day commemorations, including dawn services and marches across Australia and New Zealand. The inaugural match drew a massive crowd and received widespread attention, establishing a new tradition in Australian sports.
Since then, the Collingwood-Essendon Anzac Day clash has become one of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures on the AFL calendar, with both teams wearing specially designed guernseys featuring poppies to honor the fallen soldiers. The match typically takes place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), one of Australia’s most iconic sporting venues, and attracts large crowds, often exceeding 90,000 spectators.
The significance of the Anzac Day clash extends beyond the game itself, with ceremonies and tributes held before the match to honor servicemen and women. The Last Post is played, and a minute of silence is observed to pay respects to those who have served and sacrificed for their countries.
