Our Top 5 Things to do in Darwin

The ‘Melbourne Cup of the North’ AKA the Darwin Cup Carnival continues to gain respect and prestige as one of Australia’s great sporting events. As a result, increasing numbers are being drawn to the top end in August each year to experience it first hand for themselves. For most visitors the trip north is a full days travel and we find many look to make a real holiday of it.  On the non-race days of the Darwin Cup Carnival racegoers look for the best Darwin and Top End experiences on offer. With this in mind, we thought we’d cover our top 5 things to do in Darwin:

  1. Hire a car and take a day trip to Litchfield National Park

Litchfield National Park is arguably Darwin’s best day trip and is easy an hour-and-a-half drive from the city. Litchfield has countless diverse environments including rugged sandstone escarpments, perennial spring-fed streams, monsoon rainforest, magnetic termite mounds, waterfalls and historic ruins. Don’t forget to take your bathers!

  1. Take a half or full day fishing charter on Darwin Harbour

The Darwin Harbour is 3 times the size of Sydney Harbour and boasts an endless array of wrecks and reefs to fish. Target species include Golden Snapper, Rock Cod, Tricky Snapper, Jewfish, Coral Trout, Red Emperor, Spanish Mackerel, Tuna, Cobia and Giant Trevally.

  1. Visit the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets

Markets are on Thursday and Sunday evenings with sensational food being the primary draw card. Choose from a large range of authentic cuisines from across the globe. There is also a large contingent of stalls and various entertainers who make it for a great way to see the sun go down. Tip: BYO.

  1. Have a Croc Experience

If you are in the city visit Crocosaurus Cove who showcase some of the largest saltwater crocodiles in Australia. Take a unique close up and personal view of Australia’s iconic Saltwater Crocodiles. They also have the renowned swim with a croc experience the Cage of Death.

Another great option is to go out to the Adelaide River where you can do the Jumping Croc Cruise.

  1. Darwin’s Nightlife

Some of Darwin’s best restaurants can be found on the Waterfront and it’s a great relaxing atmosphere there with awesome quality restaurants. If you are wanting a bit of nightlife, Mitchell Street is an absolute must!
