Activity Level
The trails on the trip are mildly technical at times. In relation to fitness, all participants should be confident to sustain a challenging pace including long periods of anaerobic exercise. There are a few long hike-a-bike sections and riders can expect 4+ hours riding per day. As always, the fitter you are the more fun you’ll have.
Bike & Equipment
The ideal bike for this trip is a 5 or 6 inch all-mountain dual suspension bike with disk brakes. All participants are required to have their bikes in excellent working order before the trip begins. Basic rental bikes are available in Iceland for this trip but we strongly recommend participants bring their own bikes if possible. Riders should be prepared to ride in challenging weather conditions like cool rainy days with wind and exposure to the elements. We’ll send you a detailed list of required equipment and clothing before departure.
Lodging & Food
Accommodation for two nights in Reykjavik is in a modern hotel downtown while other nights we’ll be in remote and authentic lodges located in special remote locations. Rooms at the lodges vary from smaller six-person rooms to rooms that will accommodate the whole group (and sometimes others). The food is hearty and typical of the area. Please let us know in advance if you have any dietary needs.
Climate
I’m sure it comes as no surprise, Iceland can be chilly, even in summer. Expect nights to dip down to below 10 Celsius and days to warm up to the mid-high teens Celsius and warmer. In mountains, weather can change quickly and drastically and rain is common. Participants need to be prepared for a wide range of weather. A hot springs soak is available on several days to warm you up.
Safety
As our trips take place in remote areas with limited evacuation options available and there are always risks and hazards on the trails that we ride. If you choose to participate in our trips, it is up to you to ride well within your limits, to ride conservatively and to be safe as mountain biking is a dangerous sport.
Participants must keep their bikes and equipment in good working condition. We expect riders to keep themselves hydrated and rested. Alcohol and drugs are not permitted while riding.
Our guides have basic first aid training and if a serious injury is suspected they will call helicopter search and rescue at the cost of the participant. Therefore travel insurance is mandatory. Please ask us about an appropriate travel insurance policy to suit this trip.
